Some news items from the last couple of weeks should be of great interest to readers of this blog:
In his ipSpace blog, Ivan Pepelnjak, chief technology advisor for NIL Data Communications, discussed 6WIND”s recently-announced strategy to provide high-performance packet processing solutions optimized for cloud infrastructure.
Yankee Group reported that “Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is now one step closer to reality”, following the recent demonstration by Ericsson and Qualcomm that featured the hand-off of a voice call from an LTE network to a WCDMA network using the Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) standard from the 3GPP.
VoLTE also featured in the mobile network predictions for 2012 published by Telecoms.com, which also included other topics such as spectrum allocation, small cell backhaul and traffic optimization for video.
Another post by Yankee Group highlighted a difference of opinion between AT&T and Cisco on mobile data growth numbers. They stress, though, that “while Cisco and AT&T may not agree on the rate of mobile broadband data growth, one thing is certain: It’s growing fast, as more consumers purchase data-hungry devices and operators roll out speedier 4G networks”.
InformationWeek summarized a keynote address at the recent Cloud Connect conference in Santa Clara, in which NTT America CTO Doug Junkins outlined how telcos have the assets and track record in delivering secure and reliable services to grab a piece of the enterprise cloud services market popularized by Amazon and Rackspace.
And finally, another report by Yankee Group mentioned that the U.S. Congress has authorized the FCC to auction off unused TV broadcast spectrum, stating that “the move promises to ease the country’s severe spectrum crunch while jumpstarting even more 4G broadband rollouts”.
